W.
Douglas Wilson Appointed Deputy Registrar
Geography
teacher, administrator and author W. Douglas Wilson assumed his
new responsibilities as Deputy Registrar of the College on January
1 of this year. Wilson came to the College just over a year ago as
Manager of the Standards of Practice and Education Unit.
"Doug is a welcome addition to the senior leadership team of
the College and I look forward to working closely with him,"
says College Registrar Joe Atkinson. "He is a full and equal
partner to me in my role as Registrar."
During the past year, Wilson co-ordinated the remaining work on
the Standards of Practice for the Teaching Profession and led the
unit in the development of the Ethical Standards for the Teaching
Profession and the Professional Learning Framework for the
Teaching Profession.
Wilson began his career as a geography teacher at Pickering High
School in 1968 and later became a vice-principal at the school. He
joined the staff of Dr. F. J. Donevan Collegiate in Oshawa as
principal. In 1989, Wilson was promoted to superintendent with the
Durham Board of Education and served in three different portfolios
until 1999 when he joined the College.
In 1996, Wilson led the Durham board team that was recognized with
the Carl Bertelsmann Award for the board’s innovative approach
to staff and leadership development and the successful integration
of co-operative learning styles and recent developments in
teaching methods into schools board-wide. The Durham board was
nominated by word of mouth and selected to represent North America
for the prestigious award, eventually winning over school systems
from Norway to New Zealand. The Carl Bertelsmann Foundation is the
charitable arm of the giant German international media and
publishing conglomerate.
Wilson is also co-author of a number of geography textbooks and
teachers’ guides that have been used in schools in Ontario and
across Canada. The most recent is Close-Up Canada for Grade 7 that
was published this year. The fourth edition of each of the Grade 8
Flashback Canada and Grade 9/10 Spotlight Canada were published
last year.
Despite his many years as an administrator, says Wilson, "the
experience I value most is the 15 years I spent as a
teacher."
"I’m delighted to have the opportunity to move into a role
in which I can continue working with the College’s exemplary
staff to provide direction and leadership in the development of
the teaching profession."
Wilson holds a MEd from the Ontario Institute for Studies in
Education of the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Arts from
the University of Western Ontario.
Doug Wilson replaces J. W. (Joe) Atkinson who was appointed
Registrar effective November 1st.
