Council Meetings
At its meeting on December 3–4, 2020, College Council:
appointed Kara Smith, OCT, to the faculty of education position on Council for the duration of the term of the eighth Council;
received a presentation from Charline Grant from Parents of Black Children in Peel;
received a quarterly report from the Deputy Registrar;
received a financial report for the period ending on September 30, 2020;
received a quarterly report from the Chair;
approved the College's 2021 budget of $42,457,610 million with no adjustments to the membership fee currently set at $170;
recommended to the Minister of Education that a new Anti-Audism Additional Qualification course be enacted in Schedule C of the Teachers' Qualifications Regulation;
recommended to the Minister of Education that a new Supporting Cultures of Well-Being Additional Qualification (AQ) course be enacted in Schedule D of the Teachers' Qualifications Regulation;
appointed Mary-Anne Mouawad, OCT, as Chair of the Standards of Practice and Education Committee for the balance of the term of the eighth Council;
asked that the Minister of Education provide an update on the 11 Council-recommended AQ Regulatory changes that were forwarded to the Ministry in June 2018;
spoke with Stephen Lecce, Ontario's Minister of Education, who provided an overview of new legislation and efforts to safeguard students and modernize the College;
provided $2,000 scholarships to Kai Butterfield (OISE/UT), Joseph W. Atkinson Scholarship for Excellence in Teacher Education; Melena Hope (Lakehead University), Ontario College of Teachers Primary/Junior or Junior/Intermediate Scholarship; and Damon O'Shea (Western University), Ontario College of Teachers Intermediate/ Senior Scholarship;
appointed Dr. Derek Haime, OCT, as Registrar and Chief Executive Officer for a four-year period (one-year renewable), effective January 1, 2021;
approved governance principles for Transitional Supervisory Officer consideration; and
amended College bylaws governing the contents of the College's public register to add any certificate, diploma, advanced diploma or certificate of apprenticeship granted to an applicant related to their technological education qualifications, and any acceptable work experience and competence demonstrated by the applicant related to their technological education qualifications.
At its special meeting on December 11, 2020, College Council:
Addressed the COVID-19 teacher shortage with approval of a one-time, one-year temporary certificate for Ontario teacher candidates and labour mobility applicants.
