Australian university to offer B Ed in Ontario

The range of options for Ontario students interested in entering the teaching profession has widened with the College Accreditation Committee's decision to accredit an innovative teacher education program.

In December, the committee accredited the Bachelor of Primary Education Studies offered by Charles Sturt University of Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia.

The program is to be offered at the Bay Area Learning Centre in Burlington, which has a childcare facility, a technology centre and full operational resources.

The Australian university is partnering with the Halton District School Board to offer a one-year teacher education program in Primary-Junior education.

"The partnership between Charles Sturt University and the Halton District School Board will promote the international exchange of ideas about educational issues and provide teacher candidates with the knowledge base and practical experience required to become effective teachers," said Rick Victor, chair of the College's Accreditation Committee.

The program was accredited with the conditions that the university's status as a degree-granting institution be confirmed by the Ontario Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities and that the university, not the school board, has the ultimate authority for program content, delivery and assessment.

Charles Sturt officials hope to launch the program, which is targeted primarily at Ontario residents, in September 2005 with up to 100 teacher candidates.

This is the first teacher education program accredited by the College to an out-of-country applicant.

The responsibility for accreditation of programs at faculties of education, which is vested in the College, gives teachers in Ontario a unique role in guiding their profession.
