New Council Members

Monique Châteauvert

The provincial government has appointed two new public members to Council. Monique Châteauvert and Clyde Glasgow are also members of the College.

Monique Châteauvert is a retired member of the College who worked in public education since 1973 as a teacher and administrator. She was appointed to Council for a two-year term effective July 9, 2008.

Châteauvert taught secondary school in both French- and English-language programs in the public and Catholic school systems in eastern Ontario from 1973 to 1991, during which time she earned principal’s qualifications and supervisory officer’s qualifications.

She also earned an MEd from the University of Ottawa in 1989.

From 1991 until her retirement in February 2008, Châteauvert worked for the Ministry of Education in Toronto and Ottawa as Education Officer and Acting Senior Manager in the Operation and Field Services branch. For the last six years of her career, she was Regional Manager in the Ottawa regional office.

From 2002 to 2008 she was a member of the Provincial School Authority, which is responsible for all matters relating to the employment of teachers in Ontario’s provincial schools.

Clyde Glasgow

Clyde Glasgow, who was appointed to Council for a three-year term effective June 25, 2008, began his teaching career in 1961 in his native Guyana. He emigrated to the United States in 1968 to study at Queen’s College in New York.

During his 46 years as an educator, he has served as a lecturer, classroom teacher, program consultant, school administrator and as Education Officer with the Ontario Ministry of Education, where he assisted with the development and implementation of the Antiracism and Ethnocultural Equity Policy and was instrumental in the development of the current provincial Teacher Performance Appraisal system.

Glasgow holds a BA from McMaster University, a BEd from York University and an MEd from Niagara University. He earned a specialist certificate and a PhD in educational administration from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

He served with the Hamilton Wentworth Separate School Board for 18 years as both a classroom and resource teacher and was vice-principal at a number of schools for the London Catholic DSB. Glasgow> served on the Catholic Principals’ Council of Ontario for 10 years as a committee member and chair.

He now lives in London. His College registration number is 160057.

Morawek and Bush fill vacant Council seats

Alison Morawek

At its September meeting, Council appointed Alison Morawek to fill the vacancy created by Tianna Travaglini-Babic’s July 1st resignation from Council’s English-Language Roman Catholic Board Elementary position.

If the seat of an elected Council member becomes vacant more than six months before the member’s term of office ends, Council is required to appoint the runner-up in the category, provided the runner-up remains interested and meets the requirements of the position.

Morawek, who ran as Alison Engemann in the 2006 election and has since married, finished second among the candidates. She will replace Travaglini-Babic, whose acceptance of a secondary school Special Education post made her ineligible to continue in her Council role.

Certified in 2000, Morawek recently served as a literacy coach with the Niagara Catholic DSB and has returned to a Grade 3 classroom for this school year. She has an Honours BA and a BEd from Brock University, where she is currently finishing a master’s in education.

She began her career with the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic DSB teaching French as a Second Language to Grades 1-8 students and a Grade 5/6 class. The following year, Morawek began teaching for the Niagara Catholic DSB, where she has taught Grades 2-6 and has worked as a literacy coach with JK-8 teachers and students.

She belongs to the International Reading Association and the Canadian Society for the Study of Education and has presented posters and papers at their respective conferences. She was involved in the Ministry of Education’s literacy development initiative to help enhance boys’ reading, writing and oral communication skills.

As well, Morawek will conduct an action research project for the Ministry this year on students’ self-assessment of their writing. Her master’s degree focus is on the writing skills of primary-level students.

Tammy Bush

At its November 7 meeting, Council appointed Tammy Bush to fill the Northwest Ontario vacancy created by John Wells’s resignation.

Bush, a Grade 1 teacher with the Kenora Catholic DSB, ran second to Wells in the 2006 Council election.

Bush, certified in October 1996, taught for the Greater Essex County DSB for eight years prior to moving home to teach in Kenora. She serves as her school’s lead literacy teacher and has also taught kindergarten.

Bush has mentored new teachers and has served as an associate teacher in kindergarten and Grade 1 in the Greater Essex and Kenora Catholic DSBs. In addition, she participated in the Ministry of Education’s TurnAround Schools initiative, helping to facilitate needs-based professional development to improve academic achievement in her school’s 98 per cent Aboriginal student body.

She also took part in the Literacy and Numeracy Secretariat’s 2006 webcast, Unlocking the Potential of Aboriginal Students, and in a Queen’s University/Society for the Advancement of Excellence in Education study called Sharing Our Successes.
