St. Bernard of Clairvaux Catholic ES
Dufferin-Peel Catholic DSB Food provider: Pizza Pizza
LUNCH SPECIAL: PIZZA
PROS: Most schools generally order pepperoni pizza and cheese pizza. But they no longer have to order regular crust. “Ordering whole-wheat, thin-crust pizza is ideal,” Reza says.
CONS: One small slice of cheese pizza has about 180 calories and five grams of fat and a small slice of pepperoni has 200 calories and seven grams of fat, so it’s not the most nutritious choice. Instead of indulging in that second slice, “schools can also offer an apple to go with the pizza, and some schools have parent volunteers come in and cut up vegetables on Pizza Days,” Segal says.
IMPACT: The fibre in the whole-wheat crust levels out blood sugar, and halts afternoon sugar spikes and crashes.
