PROS: This dish is chock full of fresh, colourful vegetables like carrots, celery, onions, broccoli and peppers. It has protein from the beef, and a healthy serving of carbs — the stir-fry is dished up on steamed rice or Cantonese noodles. “Using brown rice would offer a scrumptious, nutty taste and a hit of fibre,” says Segal.

CONS: “Sweet-and-sour sauce is a condiment that contains mostly sugar,” Segal says. “Two tablespoons contain about nine grams of sugar, which is equal to two sugar cubes.” Good, low-sugar substitutes are chili and garlic sauces.

IMPACT: Students who lunch on this meal will keep their energy levels up, thanks to the vegetables and rice. Reza says both help to break down glucose, which is the body’s fuel.
