LUNCH SPECIAL: MINI TURKEY SUB SANDWICH
PROS: This sandwich consisting of a nine-grain whole-wheat bun filled with turkey slices, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers and light mayonnaise scores high marks from Lysanne Trudeau, a dietitian with the Eastern Ontario Health Unit. It’s high in fibre, low in sugar and packs 10 grams of protein. Plus, students are getting a variety of vegetables, 6 per cent of their vitamin A, 15 per cent of their vitamin C and 10 per cent of their required iron.
CONS: “This is not a complete meal,” says Trudeau. “It will need to be supplemented with yogurt, fruit, additional vegetables, milk or cheese, for example. Obviously, it should not be the only meal of the day and, ideally, the student will have started the day with a balanced breakfast.”
IMPACT: “This is a good lunch choice that meets the nutritional standards of the School Food and Beverage Policy,” says Trudeau. (According to the standards set out in this policy, developed by the Ontario Ministry of Education, these standards comply with the recommendations of Canada’s Food Guide and aim to ensure that the food and beverages sold in schools support healthy growth and development in children.) “We all know that eating healthy foods promotes success and well-being. A child who eats this sub sandwich for lunch should be able to perform well in the afternoon.”
