Better Access for College Members as AQ Provider Base Broadened

Teachers looking to sharpen their classroom skills in childhood education, the dramatic arts and around 50 other courses can now do so whether they live in downtown Toronto or the distant corners
of Ontario.

Continuing education for teachers has become more accessible as the list of providers offering one-session courses and three-session courses has been broadened. Teachers now face less travel, and can study from the convenience of their home town or city. Access for teachers in remote areas should improve significantly.

The provider list for Additional Qualification (AQ) courses for Schedule C one-session and Schedule D three-

session courses has expanded, offering increased access and availability for teachers across the province in both languages. Members of the College can choose from five lists of AQ courses, Schedules A through E. This change affects two of them, C and D.

"There’s greater accessibility," says Margaret Aubé, co-ordinator of the College’s Professional Affairs Department. "Programs can be offered across the province in a wide variety of locations.

College members take AQ courses as one way of continuing their education and becoming specialists in their chosen field. The subject areas for these courses reflect the school curriculum.

Schedule C courses are only one session, in areas like adult education or integrated arts, while Schedule D includes the three-session courses that lead to a specialist qualification in areas such as guidance and special education.

Over the past three years, the College Accreditation Committee consulted with stakeholders about expanding the provider base for Schedule C and D courses.

In response to feedback, the provider list for these courses is now open to:

  • faculties of education
  • the Ontario Teachers’ Federation and its affiliates
  • Ontario professional associations and organizations whose members hold a Certificate of Qualification issued by the College
  • district school boards
  • established non-profit Ontario consortiums whose members hold a Certificate of Qualification issued by the College
  • Ontario Ministry of Education and Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities
  • colleges of applied arts and technology in appropriate areas such as technological education, art and design, business, etc.

The change took effect February 1, 2002. Providers looking for more information can contact Laura Sheehan, Manager of Accreditation at 416-961-8800 ext. 855.
