Council election rules changing

You can expect changes to Council election rules if the legislature passes the government's Bill 78 by June 1. That's good news for College members planning to run for a position on Council, but the tight timing means you'll have to be alert to deadlines.

Under the terms of the proposed changes, 23 positions will be open – eight system positions, 11 regional positions and four category positions.

Each system position will be open to classroom teachers who work full time in the specified position. Six regional and eight system positions will be open to full-time regular teaching staff. Five regional positions will be open to part-time and occasional as well as full-time regular teaching staff. The remaining four positions will be open to those who work in the categories: faculties of education, vice-principals and principals, supervisory officers and private schools. This is unchanged from before.

There are new eligibility requirements – those running for system and regional positions must be classroom teachers, for example, and take an oath of office, if elected.

Once the legislation is passed, the nomination form will be available on the College web site, so if you are interested in running – or in nominating someone else – visit www.oct.ca and look for the election logo.

As soon as they are available, the nomination form, eligibility requirements and instructions will be posted to our web site and e-mailed to all who subscribe to our electronic newsletter, Your College and You. If you are not yet a subscriber you can sign up in your Members' Area account.

The College will produce a special election issue of Professionally Speaking that will include the Call for Nominations. The issue is scheduled to be mailed to members and posted on the College web site at the end of June, provided Bill 78 passes on schedule. It will also include a nomination form and complete information on becoming a candidate.
