COUNCIL RESPONSIBILITIES

Council responsible for issues that matter to you

The issues the Council deals with have a direct impact on your daily work, whether as a classroom teacher, a school or board administrator or other member of the profession.

As a member of Council, you – or a colleague you nominate and help to elect – might serve on the Accreditation Committee. You could directly influence the classroom readiness of new teachers who will work alongside you in your school for years to come through decisions that affect the preparation they receive in pre-service programs.

The Investigation Committee determines how the College will respond to about 150 formal complaints each year. Discipline Committee or Fitness to Practise Committee panels hear allegations against approximately 50 members per year and determine if they will be allowed to continue in the profession.

Council members serving on the Standards of Practice and Education Committee are responsible for ensuring that newly revised ethical and practise standards continue to influence the quality of teaching in Ontario.

The Editorial Board of Professionally Speaking reviews all material gathered for each issue and determines what will be given space in the magazine. The board also sets editorial policy about the kinds of stories it wants to see in the magazine and the advertising that it will accept.

Other decisions you may be asked to make as a member of the next Council will range from whether the College should purchase its own building to what qualifications teachers of the future will need in order to be certified in Ontario.

These are your issues and you will have an opportunity to discuss them with your colleagues from around the province. Take advantage of this great professional learning opportunity and the chance to contribute to the profession.
