Doug Wilson Named Registrar and Chief Executive Officer

W. Douglas Wilson has been named Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the College, effective March 31, 2003.

Wilson joined the College in September 1999 and is currently Deputy Registrar of the College. In his 35 years in education, Wilson has been a classroom teacher, vice-principal and principal, board of education superintendent and co-author of Canadian history text books.

"I am delighted to be appointed as the new Registrar of the College," said Wilson. "In the time I have been with the College, I have been very impressed by how well the College's work and its professionalism serve our members."

We know the importance of their role in student learning and believe they should be valued for their dedication to their students. I am very pleased that I will have the opportunity to lead College initiatives to support our members in their very important work."

"The College could not have chosen a more appropriate Registrar and Chief Executive Officer than Doug Wilson," said Joe Atkinson, who will retire as Registrar at the end of March. "He has been a valuable asset as Deputy, making outstanding contributions to the running of the College. Our members can rest assured that the teaching profession in Ontario will benefit greatly from his continued involvement in the development of the College. Wilson's first position with the College was as Manager of the Standards of Practice and Education Unit. He oversaw the final developmental stages of the Standards of Practice for the Teaching Profession, the Ethical Standards for the Teaching Profession and the Professional Learning Framework for the Teaching Profession. Under Wilson's leadership, the College also began the revision of all the teacher in-service courses and programs identified in Regulation 184/97, Teachers' Qualifications.

After becoming Deputy Registrar on January 1, 2001, he led the project team that implemented the Professional Learning Program (PLP). He also facilitated the development of the College's first professional advisory and represented the College at Ministry of Education consultations on the PLP and the Ontario Teacher Qualifying Test.

Before joining the College, Wilson spent 10 years as a Superintendent of Education with the Durham District School Board and prior to that held jobs as principal and vice-principal at a number of secondary schools in Oshawa. Before becoming a school and system administrator, Wilson was a geography teacher and department head, as well as a curriculum consultant in history, geography and social studies.

A highlight of Wilson's career has been the authorship of a number of Canadian history textbooks for Oxford University Press. Most of the textbooks were developed for students of Grades 7 through 10 and are used throughout the Ontario school system today.

"It was a real pleasure to be able to develop resources to help teachers make history interesting and meaningful to their students. It's one of the most important things I have done. It enhanced my skills and made me a better teacher," said Wilson.

Wilson holds a Masters of Education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Western Ontario.
