Academic qualifications

Council defines degree duration

Council has requested that the Minister of Education ratify regulatory amendments that will more clearly define academic qualifications required for initial certification and for entry to the Principal’s Qualification Program (PQP) and the Supervisory Officer’s Qualification Program (SOQP).

The proposed amendments clarify that an acceptable postsecondary degree for the purposes of initial certification must comprise at least 90 credits or their equivalent. The change ensures that the definition is consistent with definitions elsewhere in regulation.

The amendments define a master’s degree – for the purpose of entry to the PQP or the SOQP – as graduate coursework comprising a minimum of 30 credits or semester hours or their equivalent. The changes clarify that the academic qualifications required for entry to the PQP or SOQP must be in addition to the academic and professional requirements for initial teacher certification.

These changes to the Teachers’ Qualifications Regulation will ensure that all applicants to the College and to the PQP and SOQP meet the same requirements, regardless of where they were educated.
