For the first time in Ontario,
French-language teachers from all across the province started taking Additional
Basic Qualification courses through distance education this summer. The faculty
of education of the University of Ottawa is offering the ABQ-Intermediate
Division-History in French and l’École des sciences de l’éducation of
Laurentian University is offering the ABQ-Intermediate Division-Mathematics,
also in French. The College initiated this project in response to concerns raised by French-language members about access to AQ courses. In June, representatives of Laurentian and Ottawa universities, the Conseil ontarien des directions d’éducation de langue française, the Ministry of Education, the Association des enseignantes et des enseignants franco-ontariens, the Association des directions et directions adjointes des écoles franco-ontariennes and the College met in person and by teleconference to review the content of these two courses through the Internet. Reaction to the two courses and the progress that were made in the delivery options through distance education was very positive. "These two courses are an excellent example of what co-operation between faculties, IT services, College members and educational partners can do. They will make it possible for any French-language teachers in Ontario to take an ABQ in their language, wherever they are, something they would otherwise have found very difficult to achieve," said College Professional Affairs Co-ordinator Linda Grant.
