JAMES A. BLACK

James A. Black is a veteran teacher who has taught at the Primary, Junior, Intermediate, Secondary and university levels in Ontario, British Columbia and the Northwest Territories. He currently teaches at Dryden High School in the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board.

He earned his BA in 1975 from Trent University, a BEd in 1976 from Brock University and his MEd from Brock University in 1982.

Black is a former summary court judge, published author, active federation member and a teacher of 26 years. He has heard more than 1,400 cases as a summary court judge and published more than 70 articles on law and justice. He maintains a keen interest in issues of equality, social justice and equal access.

Black finished second in the 2000 Council election in the Northwest Region and assumed the position following the resignation of Rich Prophet, who is teaching in Saskatchewan.

JANET OUELLETTE

Janet Ouellette has been involved with Ontario’s education system for many years – as a teacher, a high school administrator and a supervisory officer. She is currently superintendent of education at the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board.

Ouellette has worked at the local, regional and provincial levels in teachers’ and principals’ associations. She served as a member of the College’s Pre-service Program Sub-committee, which was responsible for developing the draft accreditation process for pre-service teacher education programs. She earned her BA, in 1974, and her MEd, in 1979, from the University of Windsor. Through-out her career, her interests have focused on the im-portance of what happens between a teacher and a student.

Ouellette finished second in the 2000 Council election in the Supervisory Officer category and assumed the Council position following the retirement of Dick Malowney.

"I am looking forward to this opportunity to help ensure, through the Ontario College of Teachers, a continuation of the tradition of a quality education for every child in our province," Ouellette says.

PUBLIC APPOINTMENTS

Janet Cornwall, Elayne McDermid, Martin Kings and Karen Mitchell were reappointed by the provincial government as public representatives on the College Council effective May 1. Their previous appointments expired at the end of April. Their new appointments are all for three years.

College members elect 17 of the 31 members on the College Council. The remaining 14 members of Council are public representatives appointed by the provincial government. Parent activists, school trustees, business people and members of the community at large bring their expertise to the Council as appointed members.

Black finished second in the 2000 Council election in the Northwest Region and assumed the position following the resignation of Rich Prophet, who is teaching in Saskatchewan.
