Dufferin-Peel Catholic DSB Lesson Study #1
Debrief: Introduction to Triangles
by Nina Bekanovic, OCT, Shannon Jordan, Natasha Moore, OCT, Athena Prosdocimo,
OCT
Observational Notes
- Students were very engaged and actively participating.
- We anticipated that students would be able to draw better triangles
on the Smart Board; an equilateral triangle did not necessarily appear
to have all equal sides on the screen.
- We anticipated that students would connect the colour of the pipe cleaners
to the length of the side in a triangle; by the third type of triangle
students still required prompting to connect the two attributes.
- Time was limited, and we did not have the opportunity to connect the
types of triangles.
- The observation walk went smoothly with minor prompting to minimize
talking.
- Students required more prompting to find various sizes of triangles
in the pictures.
- It was harder to stay on script due to the amount of prompting needed.
- The student question was to be completed for homework.
Next Steps
- Fewer pictures were needed for the minds-on activity because of time
constraints. Three instead of five pictures were used.
- Start with the quilt picture instead of the sailboats, as there is
more opportunity for students to pick out various sizes and types of
triangles.
- Focus on key terms such as “all,” “two,” or “no” sides of equal length.
- Take up homework and incorporate the types of triangles into triangle
art.
