Shabnum Budhwani appointed to College Council
The province has appointed Shabnum Budhwani to replace Madhu Bhardwaj for a three-year term on College Council effective December 16, 2009. Budhwani brings 10 years experience with not-for-profit organizations.
She is Manager of Programs and Services at Skills for Change, a Toronto-based non-profit organization that provides learning and training opportunities for immigrants to access and fully participate in the workplace and the community.
Budhwani was a Skills for Change client in 1999, prior to being hired as a program assistant for the very program in which she was first enrolled. She then moved on to become an intake counsellor and subsequently program co-ordinator. She was promoted to Manager of Programs and Services in 2008 and is now enrolled in the Ontario Management Diploma Program at George Brown College. A graduate of the Maytree Foundation’s Leaders for Change program, she specializes in counselling for immigrants and refugees.
Budhwani serves on the board of York Community Services and facilitates self-help workshops with the North York Women’s Centre. A past member of the United Way Speakers Bureau, she is passionate about integrating internationally trained individuals into the Canadian labour market and about issues of access, equity and diversity.
She has two daughters, both of whom attend university.
“I am delighted to be appointed to the College Council and hope to make a positive contribution based on my experience working with internationally educated professionals,” says Budhwani.
