Rick Chambers Is New Manager
for
Professional Learning Program Unit
Waterloo English teacher Rick
Chambers, a program officer with the College’s Professional Affairs Department
since 1997, has been named Manager of the Professional Learning Program Unit.Chambers and his staff will be responsible for course providers and courses for the Professional Learning Program and will support the work of the Council’s Professional Learning Committee as it develops the program. The new program, recently mandated by Bill 80, requires members of the College to complete a Professional Learning Program of 14 courses every five years. "The Professional Learning Program Unit will support members of the College in their continuous professional growth, recognizing that professional learning is most effective when it is self-directed, job-embedded and relevant," says Chambers. "We anticipate that there will be hundreds of providers offering quality professional learning opportunities for all members of the College." Chambers joined the College after a career as a teacher and school administrator in Canada and abroad that spanned more than 25 years. Working in the Professional Affairs Department, Chambers has been closely involved in the accreditation process for faculties of education and most recently as a member of the Professional Learning Program Team. Chambers is in his second year as chair of the Conference on English Leadership, part of the National Council of Teachers of English, dedicated to meeting the professional needs of Canadian and American English department leaders and other English educators from elementary through secondary levels.
