Lindsay Hall’s CHW 3M1 Culminating Task
This semester we have practised a variety of skills related to the study
of history. These skills include:
- researching and organizing data
- sorting information into meaningful categories
- comparing and contrasting the past and the present
- identifying similarities and differences between civilizations
- developing historical questions and thesis statements
- constructing thoughtful and well-supported arguments
Your culminating task will allow you to demonstrate these skills while you explore a topic of your choice.
Instructions
1. Select a theme or topic. If you are interested in exploring a topic not listed below, please see me. The list represents only a small sampling of the options available:
- agriculture
- architecture
- art
- beauty/the aesthetic
- civil service
- gender roles
- geography (man vs nature)
- leadership style
- literature
- military
- philosophy
- political thought
- public works
- religion or belief systems
- science
- sports
- technology
- the afterlife
2. Review your notes and textbook. Gather details about your topic relating to each of the civilizations we studied this semester:
- Mesopotamia
- Egypt
- Greece
- Rome
- Middle Ages.
3. Organize the information gained in your initial research (using only your notes and textbook). You may select any of the following organizers to sort your data:
- mind map (with images)
- concept map (with linking words)
- fishbone
- timeline
Regardless of the organizer you select, you must:
- sort your information by civilization
- use colour to organize your ideas
4. Select two (2) of the civilizations we explored this semester. Complete additional research about each related to your topic. Find an additional five (5) relevant/interesting points about each civilization (10 points in total).
5. Be sure to document the sources you use during this process. Use the Bibliography Template (Appendix J) for organizational purposes.
6. Record the information on a T-chart, and using the “it says/I say” format, demonstrate your ability to think critically and construct your own meaning by responding to the quotations you selected. (You will have two (2) T-charts, one for each civilization.) Be sure to demonstrate a variety of types of thinking. Ask questions, make comments, find clarifications, make predictions and connections. Use colour and a legend to show the different kinds of thinking.
7. After you have completed the additional research, construct a Venn diagram comparing your topic in the two civilizations you selected.
8. Finally, review the information you have gained through this process and select the civilization you believe has left the most significant legacy related to your topic of study.
9. Develop a historical question related to your legacy and civilization. Your historical question must focus on the legacy concept.
10. Conduct additional research using a research method of your choice; however, you must show your thinking and meaningfully organize your data.
11. Now, develop a thesis statement answering your historical question.
12. Using the information gained through research, write an argument paragraph supporting your thesis. In this case your thesis will act as your topic sentence. Remember, all supporting points must be backed up by specific historical evidence and an explanation. Your paragraph will be a minimum of 11 sentences, based on these guidelines. Choose an organizer to help you construct your paragraph.
13. Finally, create a bibliography documenting the sources you used throughout your research and using the Chicago Manual of Style documentation model.
14. Thoughtfully organize all of your material on bristol board. Consider the relationship between the various stages of the assignment. Use additional organizational tools to enhance the overall impact.
15. Be sure to include the following on your bristol board:
- title/topic
- mind map, fishbone, concept map, timeline, etc (choice)
- two (2) “it says/I say” research notes
- Venn diagram
- additional research notes (choice)
- historical question
- thesis statement
- argument paragraph
