General Teaching Council for England
Barrier-free initiative
The Barrier-Free Education Initiatives project of the Canadian Hearing Society provides professional learning opportunities to educators and support staff to identify and remove communication barriers within the classroom and school environment. This project is funded by the Ministry of Education.
Teachers can take part in two workshops: Anti-Audism and Anti-Ableism Awareness, and Communication and Accessibility Awareness. The schedule and registration information are on the Canadian Hearing Society web site at www.chs.ca/en/barrier-free-education.
The project has two other components. School site accessibility reviews are available, in which the school receives a report that identifies gaps and makes recommendations for service delivery. The society also is conducting research on the current needs of teachers and Deaf or hard of hearing students for interpreting services.
