Atkinson Scholarship Donations Welcomed

Donations continue to build at the newly founded Ontario College of Teachers Foundation to support the Joseph W. Atkinson Scholarship for Excellence in Teacher Education.

Named for the College’s second Registrar, the annual scholarship awards $2,000 to a student enrolled in one of Ontario’s faculties of education. Teacher education candidates accepted into Ontario consecutive programs and concurrent candidates proceeding to their final year are eligible to apply. The award acknowledges one whose passion to become a teacher is reflected in both academic achievement and preparedness for the profession.

"The scholarship will help someone who has a burning desire to teach, someone who really wants to inspire children and open their eyes to a world of wonder and possibility," says College Registrar Doug Wilson. "It is not only a celebration of Joe’s contributions to education, it’s a commitment to the future vitality of the teaching profession.

"One great teacher can be a beacon for thousands of students."

The first award will be made to a student in the teacher education class of 2003-04.

The Ontario College of Teachers Foundation is a non-profit charitable organization established by the Ontario College of Teachers to recognize and support excellence in teacher education through the awarding of scholarships, bursaries and prizes that assist in the education of teachers or those wishing to become teachers.

The foundation provides financial support to encourage individuals to pursue careers in teaching and to promote professional growth among veteran teachers. Financial awards, made possible through donations, are paid directly to individuals according to criteria established by the foundation.

The foundation endeavors to support and sustain excellence in the teaching profession by reinforcing high standards and professional competence. It stimulates teaching excellence by identifying and rewarding exemplary role models – providing direct financial assistance to those who demonstrate a passion for and dedication to continuous self-improvement as educators and who contribute to the betterment of the profession.

Donations support the awards. If you would like to contribute, send your cheque to The Ontario College of Teachers Foundation, c/o The Ontario College of Teachers, 121 Bloor Street East, 6th floor, Toronto, ON M4W 3M5. Tax receipts will be issued for donations over $10.
