Your New Council

Voting closed at midnight Monday, April 14, 2003. Following are Council's successful – elected and acclaimed – and current members. Members serve a three-year term..

Bernard J. Adam

Bernard J. Adam (acclaimed, French-language public board - elementary or secondary) is a veteran educator who has taught at the Intermediate and Senior levels in Sudbury, Mississauga, Ottawa and at a Canadian Forces base in Germany.

He has taught French, English, Spanish, commerce, religion and music.


He has been in charge of the special project, Passerelles for the Conseil des écoles publiques de l'Est de l'Ontario.

On the previous Council, he served on various committees including the Executive, Discipline (Chair), Registration Appeals and Professional Learning committees and as a member of the editorial board.


Paul Brazeau

Paul Brazeau (elected, Northeast Ontario) has 31 years experience as an educator. He began teaching in his native North Bay, taught four years in Sudbury, nine years in British Columbia and one year in Australia.

He has taught Kindergarten to Grade 12 and was a long-time special education teacher, working with academically at-risk, emotionally disturbed and intellectually challenged students.

Brazeau also served as vice-principal of Dr. Carruthers School. He is president of the Near North Teachers' Local of the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario.


Jackie Breipthaupt

Jackie Breithaupt (appointed) has worked as a research, legislative and executive assistant to federal cabinet ministers.

She served as Director of Communications and Public Affairs of a federal regulatory agency and has significant experience in the private sector.

Her community service has included involvement in parent-teacher associations and parent councils.

Breithaupt has served on the Investigation and Registration and Appeals committees of Council.


Don Cattani

Don Cattani (elected, Nortwest Ontario) has been a teacher in Ontario since the early 70s, teaching Grades 7 to OAC.

Don has also been involved in numerous federation activities since the mid-70s and served 10 years as chief negotiator and the past six years as unit president of Thunder Bay Secondary Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association.


Ernie Checkeris

Ernie Checkeris (appointed) was the chair of the Rainbow District School Board in Sudbury and a trustee for 55 years.

He retired from the board in December 2000. Mr. Checkeris is an Honorary Doctor of Canon Law and was awarded the Order of Ontario in December 2000.

He is a lifetime member of the Ontario Public School Boards' Association and was appointed Chancellor of Thorneloe University in September 2001.

Checkeris has served on the Discipline and Standards of Practice and Education committees.


Janet Cornwall

Janet Cornwall (appointed) brings to Council an in-depth understanding of
self-regulatory bodies and the teaching profession.

Cornwall was Registrar of the Board of Directors of Physiotherapy from 1989 to 1993 – now the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario – and has completed course work for a MEd at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto.

She has also published articles and was a conference speaker on professional and self-regulatory issues. Cornwall has served on the Discipline and Quality Assurance committees of Council.


Ted Coulson

Ted Coulson (elected, English-language public board - secondary) is a teacher and department head in Grand Erie. He is a member of the Science Teachers' Association of Ontario (STAO) and has served as regional councillor and internal relations chair, promoting STAO, developing resources and delivering workshops for the new secondary curriculum.

He is also active in his federation, currently serving as President, District 23 of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation and is on the executive of the Brantford and District Labour Council.


Patrick J. Daly

Patrick J. Daly (appointed) has been chair of the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board since 1991 and a board trustee since 1985.

Daly is president of the Ontario School Trustees' Council and past president of the Ontario Catholic School Trustees' Association.He is also a member of the board of the Catholic Community Delivery Organization.

Daly has served on the Investigation, Professional Learning, Finance, and Election committees.


Suzanne De Froy

Suzanne De Froy (elected, Southwest Ontario) has been teaching for 10 years and has also been a teacher-mentor, an associate teacher and a teacher-education liaison officer with the University of Windsor.

She has been chair of professional development committees, a facilitator for English and literacy courses at summer institutes and a moderator for the Ontario
Teachers' Federation Survive and Thrive project.

De Froy has also been involved in projects focusing on the interpretation of educational policy and program development at the school, board and provincial levels.


Pauline Demers

Pauline Demers (appointed) is a retired teacher who taught for 36 years at the elementary and intermediate levels in Sturgeon Falls, New Liskeard, Dowling and Chelmsford.

She earned her BA in education and religious sciences from Laurentian University and received specialist qualifications in visual arts.

Demers has served as a member of her parish board and on the boards of Network North and the Association of Volunteers at the Sudbury Regional Hospital.

She has also been active as a representative of l'Association des enseignantes et des enseignants franco-ontarians (AEFO) and as a volunteer with the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Cancer Society and the United Way.


Rosemary Fontaine

Rosemary Fontaine (acclaimed, English-language Roman Catholic board - elementary) has been a classroom teacher with the Toronto Catholic District School Board since 1975.

She currently teaches Grades 4 and 5 at Sts. Cosmas and Damian Catholic School in Toronto. Fontaine is active in the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association, serving in various positions, and is a member of the Ontario Teachers Federation Education Committee.

She has been a Trustee of the Metro Catholic Teachers' Long Term Disability Board since 1990, and chaired the board for two years.


Normand W. Fortin

Normand W. Fortin (appointed) is the former Superintendent of Business and Finance with the York Catholic District School Board.

He has also served as Superintendent of Operations and Treasurer with the Kirkland Lake District Roman Catholic Separate School Board, as a member of the Ontario Association of School Business Officials and as president of the Ontario Separate School Business Officials Association.

Fortin currently lives in Brooklin.


Gord Hough

Gord Hough (elected, Southeast Ontario) has 30 years experience as an educator.

He has been actively involved with the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) and its predecessor the Ontario Public School Teachers' Federation, serving two terms as district president and as a member or chair of various committees (professional development, curriculum, research and selection committees) for 10 years.

Hough is currently in his third term as ETFO Upper Canada District local vice-president, grievance officer, newsletter editor, collective bargaining table team member and political action chair.


Nancy Hutcheson

Nancy Hutcheson (elected, Southcentral Ontario) currently teaches Grade 2 French immersion in Waterloo Region and has also taught for the Upper Grand and Lakehead District School Boards.

Hutcheson has been active in her federation throughout her 15 years of teaching.

She has been an elected member of the two previous Councils of the College, serving on the Discipline and Standards of Practice and Education committees.


Martin Kings

Martin Kings (appointed) retired after a lengthy career as a teacher, principal and private school owner to start a computer graphics business with his son.

Kings holds a PhD in education from Walden University in Minnesota.

In addition to his professional credentials, Kings brings to Council a strong sense of dedication to community, focusing on youth. Since 1975, he has been involved in youth sports and is a past president of the Kitchener Forest Heights Optimist Club.

He has served as a member of the Fitness to Practise, Standards of Practise and Education and Election committees.


Marilyn Laframboise

Marilyn Laframboise (acclaimed, French-language Roman Catholic board - elementary) teaches Grades 8 at École Sainte-Ursule in McGregor.

She has conducted workshops on teaching English as a second language and participated in writing projects on integration and implementation of the new curriculum.

Returning to the College for her third term, Laframboise served during the most recent term as Vice-Chair of Council, chaired the Human Resources committee and the Editorial Board of Professionally Speaking and was a member of the Executive, Discipline and Finance committees.

She was elected Chair at the first meeting of the third College council on May 9, 2003.


Diane Leblovic

Diane LeBlovic (appointed) served as a trustee with the Halton Board of Education from 1991 to 1997 - one term as chair.

She taught elementary school from 1965 to 1973 for the Halton Board.

She has performed extensive community work including participation on the executive of parent-teacher associations and various school board committees.

She has been a member of the Hamilton Spectator community editorial board, writing columns about education.

Leblovic has served as an appointed member of Council since the College's inception and has been a member of the Executive, Discipline and Standards of Practice and Education (Chair) Committees.


Elayne McDermid

Elayne McDermid (appointed) is a veteran educator with solid professional experience and diversified community involvement.

McDermid owns a computer service company and teaches Microsoft computer programs.

She worked in the public school system as a teacher-librarian specialist, a physical education specialist and a Language Arts, French, Mathematics and Science teacher.

McDermid's community involvement spans more than 25 years and includes a host of organizations including the Women of Achievement Awards, the Salvation Army, Big Sisters, the United Way and the Zonta Club of Brampton-Caledon.

McDermid has served on the Fitness to Practise, Professional Learning and Accreditation committees of Council.


Karen M. Mitchell

Karen M. Mitchell (appointed) has been involved in education reform for over 10 years and is a former member of the Organization for Quality Education.

She has worked at Canada House in London, England, assisting Canadians abroad with visa and immigration issues, the Technical University of Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia provincial departments of Transportation and Municipal Affairs.

Mitchell has been a member of the Discipline, Standards of Practice and Education, Quality Assurance and Editorial committees.


Larry Mongeon

Larry Mongeon (appointed) is the president of mon NET Logiciels Inc./my NET Software Inc., a consulting, developing and training firm that provides new and emerging technologies to a variety of individuals and small businesses.

He has been a member of Council since 1999 and has served on the Accreditation Committee.


Harry W. Mulvale

Harry W. Mulvale (acclaimed, English-language Roman Catholic board - secondary) is a secondary teacher with 29 years of classroom experience, teaching history, contemporary studies and Italian.

He is currently president of the Hamilton Secondary Unit of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association.

Mulvale was first elected to the College Council in 1997 and re-elected in 2000. While on Council, Mulvale was chair of the Investigation Committee and served on the Executive and the Standards of Practics and Education committees.


Iain Munro

Iain Munro (elected, Faculties of Education) is a former high school history teacher and department head and is currently a professor at Queen's Faculty of Education.

He has served as BEd Program Director and Chair of the Faculty Board and Queen's International Centre. Munro has written numerous school texts and is currently researching citizenship education in multicultural democracies.

At the College, Munro has previously served on the Accreditation and Investigation Committees, the Standards of Practice Committee and on the Editorial Board of Professionally Speaking.


Pierrette Nadeau

Pierrette Nadeau (acclaimed, French-language Roman Catholic board - secondary) has taught Grades 4 to 8 in Sudbury, followed by Grades 9 and 10 mathematics and French at Collège Sacré-Cœur.

In 1986, she transferred to École secondaire catholique l'Héritage where she taught French and guidance, becoming head of the guidance section the following year.

Nadeau currently works for the Conseil scolaire de district catholique du Nouvel-Ontario on special projects related to the Ministry of Education's new reform initiatives. On the previous Council, she has served on the Discipline, Fitness to Practise and Quality Assurance committees.


Janet M. Ouellette

Janet M. Ouellette (acclaimed, Supervisory Officer) has been an elementary and secondary teacher, a vice-principal and principal and is currently a supervisory officer at the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board.

She has worked at the local, regional and provincial levels in teachers' and principals' associations and has acted as a mentor in the Supervisory Officer's Qualification Program.

On the previous Council, Ouellette served on the Investigations and Quality Assurance committees.


Elizabeth Papadopoulos

Elizabeth Papadopoulos (elected, Central Ontario) began teaching for the City of York board in 1991 and subsequently became an employee of the Toronto District School Board.

She has been active in a number of committees dealing with professional and community aspects of effective education.

Papadopoulos has been involved in union and federation activities, initially as a teacher representative and then as an officer of local and province-wide organizations such as the Ontario Teachers' Federation.

On the previous Council, she served on the Standards of Practice and Education, Investigation and Finance committees.


Jennifer Pitt

Jennifer Pitt (elected, private schools) currently teaches at Havergal College in Toronto.

She has taught science, physics, Spanish, and French immersion science, history and geography for the Durham Board of Education.

Pitt also taught for two years at an American international school in Colombia. She has completed a Master of Arts degree in Comparative International and Development Education, with a thesis on Civic Education and Citizenship in Rural Schools in Colombia.

Pitt continues to work with several organizations in Canada and Colombia, creating educational opportunities for youth in both countries.


Patrick Slack

Patrick Slack (appointed) is retired from
a 42-year career as an educator.

He received his BA and MEd from University of Toronto, worked as a teacher and vice-principal in public secondary schools in Kingston and as principal of Gananoque Secondary School before returning to Kingston as a superintendent of schools in the separate school system.

Slack served as Executive Director of the Ontario Catholic Secondary Trustees' Association from 1991-2001 and as an expert panel member on the Rozanski Commission (The Education Equality Task Force, 2002).

He is currently a member of a study group on teaching as a profession for the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.


David Somer
David Somer (appointed) is a doctor of dental surgery, maintaining a private practice in Hamilton, and is past president of the Ontario Dental Association.

He also served on the executive council of the Canadian Dental Association. Somer was educated at the University of Toronto, where he graduated in 1965.

He serves as a member of the courtesy staff at Hamilton Health Sciences Corporation in Hamilton.

He is the founder and past president of the Home and School Association of Dundana School. Somer has served on the Accreditation and Editorial committees of the College.


Richard Victor

Richard Victor (elected, Principal/Vice-Principal) started teaching in 1973, became
a vice-principal in 1984 and a principal in 1987.

He was elected to the provincial executive of the Ontario Secondary School Principals' Council and chaired it in 1994-95.

Victor was elected to the first executive of the newly formed Ontario Principals' Council (OPC), became president in July 2000, and currently serves on the provincial council and as the president of District 5A.


Hilda Watkins

Hilda Watkins (elected, English-language public board - elementary) is First Vice-President of the Greater Essex local of the Elementary Teachers' Federation.

She is a primary, junior and intermediate-level educator. She has taught in three main areas: mainstream classrooms, special education classrooms and itinerant speech and language programs.

Watkins has held a number of local and provincial federation positions including executive member of the Elementary Teachers' Federation and governor of the Ontario Teachers' Federation.


Lila Mae (Lou) Watson

Lila Mae (Lou) Watson (appointed) has 35 years of experience in public education in Scarborough – as a teacher, vice-principal and principal and supervisory officer with the Board of Education.

Since her retirement in 1997, she has served as chair on the Toronto Strategic Business Alliance's Youth Sub-Committee on School to Work Transition, the Scarborough Progress Career Planning Centre Board (1996-99) and has chaired the school councils sub-committee of the Ministry of Education and Training Education Policy Advisory Council.
