Meet your newly elected Council members.
Heather Nagy* (English-language
public board – secondary) is a teacher-librarian at Bendale
Business and Technical Institute in Scarborough. She has 28 years of
experience teaching English, math and physical education at the secondary
level, and prior to that was an elementary teacher. Active in the Ontario
Secondary School Teachers' Federation, she has worked on various committees
and contributed articles to federation publications. Nagy is also a
member of the South East Secondary Teacher Librarians' Association,
the Ontario Library Association and the Ontario School Library Association.
She has a BA and a BPE from McMaster University and a BEd from the
University of Western Ontario. Her College registration number is 234637.
Dean Favero (French-language
Roman Catholic board – elementary) is a teacher in the Conseil
des écoles catholiques de langue française du Centre-Est
where he taught Grades 4 through 8 as well as classes for autistic
students. Currently, he teaches Special Education students. An active
member of the Association des enseignantes et des enseignants franco-ontariens,
he has served in a wide range of leadership positions at the local
and provincial levels. Among his many professional development activities,
he was a facilitator during forums on the teaching profession ethical
standards review and has marked Grades 3, 6 and 9 for the Education
Quality and Accountability Office. Favero has a diploma in administration
from Canadore College. He earned a BA from the University of Western
Ontario with an Honours qualification from the University of Ottawa,
where he also earned his BEd. His College registration number is 174965.
Nick Forte (English-language
Roman Catholic board – secondary), a science teacher at
John Paul II Catholic Secondary School, joined the London District
Catholic School Board in 1985. As a writer on education topics he won
the provincial Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association (OECTA)
communications award in 2000 for best news story and the 1999 award
for best editorial or commentary. He has served with the London District
OECTA as a bargaining committee member and first vice-president. He
has an Honours BA, a BEd and an MEd from the University of Western
Ontario. Forte joined Council in December 2005 when he was appointed
to fill a vacancy. His College registration number is 175283.
Annilee Jarvis (English-language
public board – elementary) is a Special Education teacher
in the York Region DSB, programming for kindergarten to Grade 7. She
has held numerous positions in the Elementary Teachers' Federation
of the Ontario York Region teacher local, including membership on the
negotiating table team, the collective bargaining committee and the
human rights committee, and both chair and steward of professional
development. Jarvis has an Honours BA from McMaster University and
a BEd from the University of Toronto. She participates in board and
teacher-driven initiatives for math, literacy, ESL and Special Education.

Jacques Pavesi (French-language
Roman Catholic board – secondary) has been appointed to
the fourth Council. Pavesi fills the vacant seat, which had gone uncontested
in the 2006 Council election. On the recommendation of the Nomination
Committee from eight applicants, Council appointed Pavesi on November
9th.
Tianna Travaglini-Babic (English-language
Roman Catholic board – elementary) has been with the Huron
Superior Catholic DSB for the past eight years as a full-time elementary
school teacher in the Primary, Junior and Intermediate divisions. Currently,
she teaches a Grades 3 to 5 class for students with learning exceptionalities.
Treasurer on the local executive, she has been part of the collective
bargaining team for the past three contracts. As a beginning teacher
she participated in the Ontario Teachers' Federation's beginning teachers'
focus group. She has a BA from Algoma University and a BEd from Nipissing
University. Her College registration number is 272593.
Jacques Tremblay (French-language
public board – elementary and secondary) teaches high school
French, computer science and technology with the Conseil des écoles
publiques de l'Est de l'Ontario. He is active in course writing, curriculum
implementation and leadership training and has served on the Association
des enseignantes et des enseignants franco-ontariens as school delegate
and rep for the Kingston region. A graduate of the Program of Teacher
Education at the Université du Québec, Tremblay has a
BA from the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi
and an MA from Queen's University. He first became a member of Council
in 2004. His College registration number is 218079.
Council member replaced
Heather Nagy will serve as Council's English-language public board – secondary
representative following the withdrawal of Karen Bond.
Bond, who won the seat in the recent Council election, wrote to advise
the Registrar that she was unable to assume the role. Nagy, runner-up
in the category, will serve in Bond's place.
Nagy, a teacher-librarian with the Toronto DSB, has 28 years of secondary
school teaching experience.
